IPv4/IPv6 변환기나 IPv4/IPv6 환경에서 사용되는 프락시나 게이트웨이와 같은 장치에서 알고리즘에 의한 매핑(algorithmic mapping) 방법으로 주어진 IPv6 주소를 해당되는 IPv4 주소로 변환 또는 그 역으로 변환해 주는 기법에 대해서 정의하고 있다. 이러한 알고리즘에 의한 매핑이 가능하도록 ‘well-known’ 프리픽스인 64:ff9b::/96 를 정의했으며, 또한 network-specific한 프리픽스의 사용도 허용한다. 또한 IPv4-converted IPv6 주소 및 IPv4-translatable IPv6 주소 형식도 정의하고, 이와 같은 IPv4-embedded IPv6 주소로부터 IPv4 주소를 추출하는 알고리즘을 정의한다. |

This standard describes the algorithmic translation of an IPv6 address to a corresponding IPv4 address, and vice versa, using only statically configured information. It defines a well-known prefix for use in algorithmic translations, while allowing organizations to also use network-specific prefixes when appropriate. Algorithmic translation is used in IPv4/IPv6 translators, as well as other types of proxies and gateways (e.g., for DNS) used in IPv4/IPv6 scenarios.
