| 한글내용요약 | 이 표준에서는 웹 콘텐츠에 포함된 어떤 이미지가 전달하려는 정보와 이의 대체 텍스트의 내용이 동등한가를 평가하는 기준을 제시하였다. 이를 위하여 먼저 대체 텍스트 제공 원리를 제시하였다. 또한 웹 콘텐츠에 포함될 수 있는 이미지의 용도를 분류하고 이미지의 용도별, 사용된 맥락별로 ‘적절한’ 대체 텍스트 작성 방법을 설명하였다.
동일한 이미지라고 하더라도 그 의미는 사용되는 맥락에 따라 달라진다. 예를 들어 잘 깎인 연필 이미지는 용도에 따라 전달하려는 의미가 서로 다를 수 있다. 글머리임을 알려주기 위한 용도일 수도 있고, 연필 제조사의 상품 소개용 글을 작성하는 메모장이나 게시판 등에 사용될 수 있다. 따라서 잘 작성된 대체 텍스트는 이미지가 사용된 맥락을 충실하게 반영하고 있어야 한다. 이미지에 대해 지나치게 상세한 설명을 대체 텍스트로 제공하는 것은 사용자에게 도리어 불편함을 준다. 대체 텍스트가 길어질수록 화면 낭독 프로그램 사용자가 그 내용을 듣고 이미지를 인식하는 데 소요되는 시간이 길어진다. 따라서 대체 텍스트의 길이는 짧을수록 좋다. 그러나 과도하게 축약된 대체 텍스트는 이미지가 전달하려는 의미를 충분히 제공할 수 없다. 이 표준에서는 이러한 문제에 대해서도 체계적인 대안을 제시하고 있다. |

| 영문내용요약 | This standard is to specify how to determine the equivalence of alternative text and images. It first presents principles of describing alternative text for images. Then, it classifies images according to their applications and contexts in order to determine which method should be used to describe their 'adequate' alternative texts.
The meaning of an image can be interpreted differently according to its context. For example, the purpose for an image of a sharpened pencil could be to exist as a bullet, to represent a product from a pencil manufacturer, or to be used in a notepad or on a notice board. Thus, an adequate alternative text has to considerate of the context in which the image is used. Providing excessive detailed descriptions about an image bothers users. Therefore, it's better to provide an alternative text which is concise. It does not necessarily mean, however, that the summarized alternative text is better. This guideline introduces the methods to handle such cases. |
