¿µ¹®³»¿ë¿ä¾à This standard provides a broad introductory overview of AIS as a whole such as purpose and background of AIS and required shore infrastructure. It introduces the layered structure of AIS and the applications using AIS derived information. This article also indicates where the different types of AIS stations fit into the layered concept of the AIS as a whole, i.e. it maps the AIS stations to the layers of the ISO/OSI-layer model.

The large and still expanding volume of relevant international documents and standards has created the need for a reference guide. This standard describes the definitions of class A and class B and the usage of AIS for the Aid to Navigation. It also explains the functional block diagram, requirements of transmitters and receivers, and base station reports. In addition, this standard describes the simplex repeater which receives and retransmits AIS messages. This standard goes on to explain the block diagram of duplex AIS repeaters and the requirements of transmitters and receivers. It also describes the transport network which is used to transmit and exchange AIS data, and it covers the method for applying the TCP/IP protocol.
This standard also describes the RF propagation range, the shore based infrastructure plan, the propagation range of base stations which should be considered during AIS range planning, the receive option of AIS shore infrastructure and the cooperation of multiple AIS base stations. Furthermore, it describes the basic concepts of channel management and channel management commands. In addition, this standard outlines AIS service setting issues and requirements.
