The RDS2 technology has been improved by applying three additional subcarriers, and the use of the existing receiver is supported by being compatible with the previous version, so the basic RDS function can continue to be used without being disturbed by the addition of new functions. The RDS Forum was established in 1993 and serves as a liaison network for exchanging experiences on the correct application and implementation of RDS technologies. Since 1999, the RDS Forum has also been responsible for maintaining the IEC's RDS standards. This report includes an overview of the RDS (Radio Data System) developed to transmit data using the FM radio broadcasting network, the history of technology development and standardization promotion, major contents of the technology, and introduction of the RDS transmission/reception performance evaluation system. RDS was developed by the European EBU for the purpose of transmitting data using the FM radio broadcasting network in the 1970s, and commercialization began in the 1980s. Since then, RDS has been introduced in many countries such as Europe, the United States, and Asia, and further technology development continues to this day. In 2019, the RDS2 standard, which improved the RDS technology, was released, marking a new leap forward.
