¿µ¹® ³»¿ë¿ä¾à Wi-Fi Sensing is a new technology that uses existing Wi-Fi signals for motion detection, gesture recognition, and biometric measurement. Wi-Fi Sensing uses the existing wireless LAN standards, hardware, and infrastructure as it is to detect the movement of nearby objects in a radar-like manner. Wi-Fi Sensing is particularly useful for home monitoring, sleep management, and building automation/management applications, providing new market opportunities for Wi-Fi service providers.

Wi-Fi Sensing technology and applications are new technologies and there is no standard yet, but the interface specification between application layers and PHY/MAC layers is being standardized in IEEE 802.11bf task group. Therefore, this use case standard contributes to spread the technology and increase compatibility of Wi-Fi Sensing applications. Technical reports can help address existing use cases and enable the development of new use cases which were impossible previously. A typical home monitoring use case of Wi-Fi Sensing uses an existing Wi-Fi home network to remotely monitor what is happening at home when the people is away from home. At its simplest, using Wi-Fi Sensing, users can only detect the presence and intensity of movement in the house, and additionally can determine locations.

The technical report provides standard guidelines for enabling Wi-Fi Sensing application to domestic wireless LAN router development SMEs and wireless LAN terminal manufacturers such as smartphones and home appliances. Therefore, it is expected to lead to product differentiation and increased sales in the market. In addition, intrusion and activity detection applications can be used in many environments where wireless LANs are used, so it can improve social safety without invasion of privacy.
