SIP와 SDP는 UTF-8 문자셋을 사용하는 텍스트 기반 프로토콜로서 대역폭이 큰 링크를 위해 설계되었다. 상대적으로 대역폭이 작은 링크에서 동작할 때 세션 설정에 소요되는 시간이 크게 증가된다. SIP/SDP 시그널을 압축해서 사용할 경우 세션 설정 시간이 극적으로 감소된다. IETF RFC3320에서는 다양한 신호 압축 메커니즘을 기술하고 있다. 본 표준은 메시지의 압축률을 높여 세션 설정 시간을 가능한 줄이기 위한 SIP/SDP 라이브러리를 정의한다

영문 내용요약

The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and the Session Description Protocol (SDP) are test-based protocols that use the UTF-8 charset, and were designed for rich bandwidth links. However, when SIP/SDP is run over narrow bandwidth links, the session setup time increases substantially, compared to an operation over a rich bandwidth link. The session setup time is decreased dramatically if the SIP/SDP signaling is compressed. IETF RFC3320 specifies signaling compression mechanisms. This standard defines SIP/SDP library so as to reduce the session setup time as much as possible by boosting the compression rate.
